Call for Participants: Ukrainian Literature Book Club (Summer Start)
If you have been looking for a gentle, structured way to read more in Ukrainian, this summer book club is for you. We are launching a free Ukrainian literature reading group designed especially for learners and enthusiasts of the Ukrainian language and its rich literary tradition.
All meetings will be held in Ukrainian, with plenty of support in English when needed. Our aim is to create a space where you can stretch your language skills, explore both classic and contemporary texts, and feel encouraged rather than overwhelmed.
Who is this book club for?
This book club is aimed at:
- Learners of Ukrainian who want a motivating reason to read regularly
- Readers who already love Ukrainian literature and want to discuss it with others
- People curious about Ukrainian culture, history, and ideas, approached through texts
You do not need to be “fluent enough” or an expert in literature to take part. If you can read with a dictionary nearby, follow a guided discussion, and are willing to ask questions, you are very welcome.
When we start & what to expect
The book club will begin in the summer. We will meet regularly to read and discuss selected texts in Ukrainian. Sessions will be structured and guided: we will provide key vocabulary, background on the author and context, and suggested questions to help you participate at whatever level you feel comfortable.
Our atmosphere will be deliberately supportive and low-pressure. You are free to listen more on the days you feel tired, or to speak up and try out new language when you feel ready. Mistakes are expected and welcome as part of the learning process.
Help choose what we read
We are currently gathering suggestions for our reading list and would love to hear from you. You can propose books—both classics and contemporary works of Ukrainian literature—through the form on the Subscribe page.
Here is how it works: visit the Subscribe page, enter your name and email address, and use the message field to share your book suggestions. Feel free to tell us why you are interested in a particular text (for example, its theme, period, or level of difficulty). We will review all proposals and use them to shape the first rounds of our reading schedule.
Nervous about your level? Join anyway.
If you are hesitating because you think your Ukrainian is not “good enough,” you are exactly the person this book club is meant to support. We will read at a manageable pace, provide glossaries and summaries, and build in time for questions. You are welcome to participate in whatever way feels right for you—speaking, writing in the chat, or simply listening as you gain confidence.
Our goal is to explore Ukrainian literature with academic curiosity and care, while keeping the tone warm, inclusive, and human. Together we can create a space where learners and more experienced readers learn from one another.
If you are interested in joining, please head to the Subscribe page, add your details, and mention that you would like to take part in the Ukrainian literature book club. We will follow up with dates, texts, and practical information closer to the summer start.
